Painkillers: Relief for Pain, Risk for Kidneys!
Many people take painkillers regularly for headaches, body-aches, arthritis, or fever. While these medicines often give quick relief, some of them can harm the kidneys if used in excess or for a long time. This sudden damage to the kidneys is called "Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)*.
Painkillers like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, and similar medicines (commonly known as NSAIDs) reduce pain and swelling, but they also reduce blood flow to the kidneys. In people who already have health problems—such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or dehydration—these medicines can increase the risk of kidney injury. Even in healthy people, long-term or high-dose use can be dangerous.
The signs of kidney failure may not be obvious at first. Some people may notice less urine, swelling of feet, unexplained fatigue, or nausea. In severe cases, kidney damage may require dialysis for recovery. If the disease becomes advanced, some patients may also need kidney transplant.
The best way to protect your kidneys is to use painkillers only when really needed, in the lowest dose for the shortest time, and under medical advice. People with kidney disease or other chronic illnesses should always consult a doctor before taking pain medicines. Your kidneys are precious—take care of them.
