Cholecystitis

It was another dull day in the otherwise boring routine which Mrs. SK had to go through everyday. Wake up early, prepare kids for school, cook for everyone including the husband and the in-laws. She always missed her breakfast and had to resort to some oily savoury items from the street vendor below her office.

She always got this "acidity" (at least that's what her family physician told her) after eating that food.

But today was fatefully different. The pain, which she knew would come after eating that Vada Paav, refused to go away. By noon, it was unbearable and she was forced to excuse herself from a meeting and look for a painkiller. Even after popping that pill, no respite was seen, and she had to be taken to hospital in agony.

The surgeon asked for an ultrasound saw an inflamed gall bladder with stones in it: acute cholecystitis.

An emergency surgery was performed, and the pain disappeared. Recovery was uneventful, but the stormy event was one to remember for the family.

You may get gallstones if you are overweight, eat a lot of fried food and have irregular meal timings.

The pain typically begins after oily & spicy foods, and can be self-limiting at first, only to worsen later. Hence, a timely ultrasound (sonography) and consideration of a surgery is required. At the hands of a good surgeon, it's a safe procedure and only a short admission is required.

Consult your Gastroenterologist today if you have symptoms of gallstones.
