Burning in the Chest? It Could Be GERD!

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly called GERD, is a very common digestive problem. It happens when acid flows back into your food-pipe (the esophagus). This irritates the food-pipe and leads to "heartburn".

The most common symptom is burning deep inside the chest, especially after meals or at night when lying down. You may also feel sour liquid coming into the mouth or a persistent cough and throat irritation.

Bad habits bring GERD: Over-eating, late-night meals, alcohol, excess tea or coffee, tobacco and smoking. Even chocolates cause reflux when eaten regularly. Simple changes like eating smaller meals, avoiding sleep right after eating, maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting tobacco & alcohol can reduce symptoms.

If symptoms occur more than twice a week, do not ignore them. Persistent GERD can lead to complications like ulcers, narrowing of the food pipe, or even precancerous changes. Modern treatments, including safe antacids and lifestyle adjustments, are very effective. Consult your doctor if you suspect GERD— while antacids may be effective, you may need an endoscopy if there are warning signs. Treatment is simple and effeective when initiated on time.
